Privacy: What This Site Measures and Stores
Updated
Treaties & Tradeoffs (treatiesandtradeoffs.com) is a reading site. It has no accounts, comments, sign-up forms or newsletter, and it shows no advertising. This page lists what the site measures, what it keeps in your browser, and how to switch measurement off.
Google Analytics
The site uses Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which pages are read. When it runs, Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser and collects the pages you view, the page that sent you here, your device and browser type, and an approximate location derived from your IP address. It also records some actions on a page, such as scrolling down it, downloading a file or following a link that leaves the site.
The site tells Google Analytics that this data may not be used for advertising: advertising storage, advertising use of user data and ad personalization are all set to denied. Google signals and the sharing of data with Google's other products are switched off, and the data is kept for 14 months.
If you visit from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, from a few nearby territories under the same data-protection rules, or from a location that cannot be determined, a box at the foot of the page asks for your choice first. Until you choose Accept, Google Analytics is not loaded at all: no cookie is set and nothing is sent to Google. If you choose Decline, it is never loaded.
To work out whether the box applies, your browser asks Cloudflare, which serves the site, for the country your connection comes from. The answer is used on the spot and is not stored.
Visitors from other locations do not see the box, and Google Analytics loads when a page opens.
Anyone, anywhere, can change the choice later through the link at the foot of every page that reopens the box. Choosing Decline there stops Google Analytics from loading in this browser from then on; if it was already running, the page reloads without it. Cookies that Google Analytics set before then stay until they expire or until you delete them in your browser settings.
Google explains how it uses information from sites that use its services here: https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites
Cloudflare Web Analytics
Cloudflare, which serves the site, also runs Cloudflare Web Analytics on every page for every visitor. It counts page views and measures how fast pages load. It sets no cookies and stores nothing in your browser, and Cloudflare states that it does not fingerprint visitors. Because it uses neither, the consent box does not control it, and it runs in every region.
A content blocker that blocks scripts from static.cloudflareinsights.com will stop it. Cloudflare's privacy policy is at https://www.cloudflare.com/privacypolicy/
Like any web host, Cloudflare handles your IP address in order to deliver pages and protect the site. Connections from mainland China and Russia are blocked at the network level.
Stored in your browser
cookie-choice-55b7: your Accept or Decline choice, saved in local storage asgrantedordenied. It stays until you clear this site's data.maproom-lamp: your light or dark page choice, saved in local storage only after you press the switch. It stays until you clear this site's data.
Site search
The search box filters the list of articles inside your browser. What you type is not sent to this site or to anyone else.
If you write to contact@treatiesandtradeoffs.com, your address and message are used only to deal with that message. They are not added to any mailing list or used for anything else.
Fonts and outside services
Fonts are served from this site itself. Pages load no social-media buttons, embedded videos or third-party font services.
Advertising
The site carries no advertising and sets no advertising cookies. This page will be updated before that changes.
Other terms
How the site's diagrams, data tables and images may be reused is set out in Reuse terms. Nothing on this site is investment, legal or career advice.
